This week we have been taking part in lots of Christmas activities, including practising for our Christmas play 'Ralph the Reindeer'!
We made our own Christmas cards to take home for our families.
We made chocolate truffles for Christmas gifts!
We made 3D Christmas gift boxes.
We made party hats for our school Christmas lunch.
Riley's mum very kindly came in to visit us to talk about how Chinese New Year is celebrated, as a part of our 'Let's Celebrate' topic.
We learnt about the story of Babushka and how she helped the three wise men and wanted to join them on their journey to see baby Jesus, but could not find the way. We used finger puppets to act out the story with our friends and made our own zig-zag books of 'Babushka'.
We have been looking at addition and subtraction, following our work on number bonds, and used Babushka Russian dolls to help us with our number sentences.
This week we have been learning about the different seasons and what is special about each. We mixed our own colours with paint and created 2D season paintings.
The children decided that we needed to decorate the classroom for Christmas, and so we made paper snowflakes, paper chains and christmas wreaths using beads and string.
We have continued to learn about number bonds within our maths lessons, but this week it has been even more challenging as we have been learning number bonds to 20! We used counting strings, numicon and unifix cubes to support us with this.
This week in maths we have neen learning to make number bonds to 10 using Numicon. We used the scales to check that our number bonds were correct, comparing them to a piece of 10.
In English we have been learning to retell and sequence the story of 'Goldilocks and the three bears', using Pie Corbett storytelling techniques. We have practised telling the story together, sequenced the images in our English books, and retold the story together in groups, focusing on using describing words and interesting sentence openers such as next, after that, suddenly, finally and at that moment!
We have been decorating our Christmas mugs ready to sell at the 'Christmas Fayre' next week!
On Friday we were very lucky to have Shannon's mum come in to class to help us with our henna hand painting, as a part of our Diwali week. The children were very excited about this and are very proud of their personal rangoli patterns!
This week we had a 'Diwali day' where we were able to experience lots of different activities based on Diwali, such as a Hindu wedding, making Diva lamps, trying on traditional dress and tasting sweets. The children had a fantastic day and really enjoyed learning about different aspects of Hindu culture.
In maths this week we have been learning to tell the time and why it is important to know how to tell the time. We have been focusing on 'o'clock' and 'half-past' and learning about what the hour and minute hands mean on a clock.
This week in English we have been writing about Diwali and Holi, and writing invitations to people at home to join us for our class assembly next week.
This week we have continued to learn about cultural festivals around the world. We have been looking at the Buddhist festival, Vesak, and introduced the Hindu festival of colour, Holi. We danced to celebration music using silk and pom poms, in preparation for our class assembly at the end of the month...
In maths we have been recapping what we have previously learnt about addition and subtraction. We learnt how to use a number line to support us in finding the answers to subtraction and addition number sentences, and counting ladybirds, which helped us with our addition.
We had our Key Stage 1 assembly with Year 2, where we talked about anti-bullying week, and the importance of being kind to others, and speaking up if we ever experience bullying of any kind.
We made our own Vesak lotus flower lanterns and wrote instructions on how to create them.
This week we have been learning all about Bonfire Night and Guy Fawkes. We created our own rockets, made chalk pastel images of the night sky with fireworks in, and wrote sentences and poems about Bonfire Night and fireworks.
This week in P.E we have been focusing on balance and movement. We explored different balances independently and were given the opportunity to use the balance beam. We also explored different styles of jumping from the bench on to the crash mat.
We have been learning about symmetry in our maths lessons this week. We painted our own symmetrical firework pictures, used peg boards to create symmetrical images and sorted symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes.
