Here at Oldmixon Primary School we endeavour to make P.E. an enjoyable experience for all children. We encourage all children to participate in a range of different ways and inspire children to be the best they can be. Our teaching is focused on skills through sequences of lessons directed towards a specific aspect of physical activity. We teach them to appreciate different skills and also new and obscure sports, such as skateboarding, archery and walking football. As children progress through Oldmixon Primary School, they take an increased amount of responsibility for their own physical activity. They are able to help lead warm ups and understand the importance of warming up and cooling down. However, here at Oldmixon, we don’t just focus on the physical activity, we also show a huge importance to the why of physical activity, including healthy eating and leading healthy lifestyles. For the past 2 years this included sports week, with a healthy lifestyles link, and also Year 5 and 6 having the opportunity to participate in Health Squad led by Bristol Flyers Basketball.
Our sports coaches provide P.E. provision for our Key Stage 2 classes and Mr Thomas provides our KS1 provision, both of these are assets to our school provision. They provide excellent resources and provision to our school and give the children multiple different opportunities throughout the year. We are also extremely lucky to have our ELAN Sports Champion Lee Molland available to provide high quality sessions to our children but also provide support for our teachers to ensure that children are consistently experiencing the highest standard of P.E.
From September 2020, we will be introducing realPE. This will allow us to develop not only their physical and sporting skills but also the whole child. We will build on social, mental and personal skills with every child looking for their personal best. Alongside this, Oldmixon will be introducing skip to be fit, this will include adults too! This will work seamlessly with our personal best initiative with every child striving for better each time whilst also increasing their fitness and being provided with even more daily physical activity.
Within Physical Education, comes the aspect of competitive sport and participation. We strive for every child to have the opportunity to participate in sport outside of the curriculum. We offer many different opportunities from Tag Rugby to Boccia to Gymnastics. Children are always enthusiastic when participating and we carry a very strong ethos of TREDS (teamwork, resilience, enthusiasm, determination, sportsmanship), which is shown throughout the school and presented in our golden assembly.
