Term 6

Welcome back to term 6!!

Our new topic for this term is Under the sea.

This week the children have been busy making their own posters to show what they already know about the topic.

On Friday we went on our class trip to Bristol Aquarium, we were lead around by one of the staff, who was very friendly, he told us lots of information about all of the animals we saw. We were also able to feed some of the animal, we fed some very colourful fish that are originally from the rain forest so they were in the rain forest area which was very warm. We saw lots of interesting animals and learnt about them all. A few of our favorites were Georgie and Sharky, the sharks, Patrick the giant lobster who was over 80 years old and the Sting rays. It was a really great day out and we all had lots of fun learning new facts that will also help us with our topic this term.

This week the children have been looking at the Jewish religion and festivals they celebrate. We have learnt how to play a Jewish game called Dreidel which is played while celebrating the holiday of Chanukah, they had lots of fun learning about the game and having a go at playing the game together.

This week as a school the children have been celebrating the Jewish festival of Ramadan. In year one we made good deed calendars, Ramadan lanterns and mosaic light catchers. On Thursday afternoon we had a whole school assembley and each class was able to show their work and talk about what they learnt about Ramadan.

This week the children have been learning all about 2D and 3D shapes, we have looked at their properties and how they are made up. We have been looking at 3D shape nets to make our own 3D shapes, the children thoroughly enjoyed seeing how the nets went together to form the shapes.

Over the last few weeks children have been practising very hard running up to sports day. This week they were finally able to show there skills to the whole school and their families. It was a very warm afternoon and the children did so well earning team points for their countries they had been divided into. The events the children participated in were assault course, running race, hurdles, long jump, javelin, bean bag throwing and penalty shoot out. It was a brilliant afternoon for all involved.

This week the whole school went on a trip to the Wraxall show ground to The Countryside Day. A great day was had by all. In Year One we were able to see lots of farm animals, watch the tractors mow the grass and turn it into a big bail of silage and watch a sheep show with 'dancing sheep'where the farmer showed us how to shear a sheep. We also went around lots of information stalls about the countryside; we saw hunting dogs and learnt how to make felt. We learnt about bees and how they make honey, what wool was used for, how to build a fence out of trees and how to build a stone wall. We also found out how potatoes were grown and then got to taste them too!!
